Then There Was B. (2021)

Sumera Khan

This artwork is an ode to the B cells that produce antibodies against viruses/bacteria in our body. The pandemic gave me a new appreciation for the human body and what it has to do to keep us safe. I think there's so much beauty in the absolute balance of functions that are happening on a molecular level. The circular shapes in this work represent red cells and B cells. When I thought of the word endurance, I immediately thought of the fight between the viruses and our body. I think it's a fight we all know and very relevant to today's time. As I made this work, it was a pleasant surprise to see its resemblance with flowers and nature. The connection between humans and nature is an inevitable one and I love that this piece led me there.
