Since the pandemic started, I've relied on my air cleaner more than I ever did before. However, after using it aggressively for about a year, it broke. No matter how many times I cleaned the filters, it just didn't work anymore. I took out the filters to clean it again just in case, and then I recognized how it resembled the shape of windows. I painted an abstract illustration of the Tokyo night lights and streets over the uncleaned filters using fluorescent paint which can be illuminated using a blacklight, a light that’s typically used to emphasize bacteria. In the filters, you can view the painted Tokyo scenery, which was unable to see in real life because of the airborne contaminants that are possibly caught on those filters.

Filtered Windows combines performing, visual, sound, video arts while exploring that feeling of being stuck inside the house. Depending on how you shine the blacklight, the “night lights” on the window reflect on the surface of the air cleaner machine, as it usually does when you see a neon light outside. In the video, the white noise of air and wind is accentuated due to the lack of the vibrant nightlife. Using the blacklight, I searched for the neon lights and words hidden in the distorted colors which make me feel at home, while I was stuck inside my home.
